A Greener Web

A Greener Web challenges the misconception that the digital transition is automatically an environmentally friendly solution by spotlighting the responsibility web designers and developers hold to design and build sustainable sites.

About the Project

This research-based capstone project took place over the course of a year, with the first portion of the year being devoted to exploration and the developing the project proposal and second portion focusing on crafting the final piece. The objective was to design and develop an educational resource that communicates how digital platforms are not always a more sustainable solution while also serving as an educational example of how work can be strategically designed to be more environmentally friendly.

Through understanding digital transformation, carbon footprints, energy consumption, and user experience, the results was an educational resource that addresses how the rapidly growing Information and Communications Technology industry contributes to the current environmental crisis rather than alleviating it and offers solutions to combat this increasing issue.

The final product is a website and accompanying printable guide that walks users through what sustainable web design is, why addressing this topic is so crucial, what are the components of green websites and how to implement them, and offers materials for further learning. Both assets utilize strategic design choices around typography, color, illustration, animation, hierarchy, and user experience to present information in a clear, understandable format.
